8:1 Yahuwah said to Mosheh, 2 "Speak to Aharon and say to him, 'When you set up the seven lamps, they are to light the area in front of the lampstand.'" 3 Aharon did so; he set up the lamps so that they faced forward on the lampstand, just as Yahuwah commanded Mosheh. 4 This is how the lampstand was made: It was made of hammered gold-- from its base to its blossoms. The lampstand was made exactly like the pattern Yahuwah had shown Mosheh. Setting Apart the Lewites for Service 5 Yahuwah said to Mosheh: 6 "Take the Levites from among the other sons of Yisrael and make them clean. 7 To purify them, do this: Sprinkle the water of cleansing on them; then have them shave their whole bodies and wash their clothes, and so purify themselves. 8 Have them take a young bull with its grain offering of fine flour mixed with oil; then you are to take a second young bull for a sin offering. 9 Bring the Levites to the front of the Tent of Appointment and assemble the whole community of the sons of Yisrael. 10 You are to bring the Levites before Yahuwah, and the sons of Yisrael are to lay their hands on them. 11 Aharon is to present the Levites before Yahuwah as a wave offering from the sons of Yisrael, so that they may be ready to do the work of Yahuwah. 12 "After the Levites lay their hands on the heads of the bulls, use the one for a sin offering to Yahuwah and the other for a burnt offering, to make atonement for the Levites. 13 Have the Levites stand in front of Aharon and his sons and then present them as a wave offering to Yahuwah. 14 In this way you are to set the Levites apart from the other sons of Yisrael, and the Levites will be mine. 15 "After you have purified the Levites and presented them as a wave offering, they are to come to do their work at the Tent of Appointment. 16 They are the sons of Yisrael who are to be given wholly to me. I have taken them as my own in place of the firstborn, the first male offspring from every Yisraelite woman. 17 Every firstborn male in Yisrael, whether man or animal, is mine. When I struck down all the firstborn in Mitzrayim, I set them apart for myself. 18 And I have taken the Levites in place of all the firstborn sons in Yisrael. 19 Of all the sons of Yisrael, I have given the Levites as gifts to Aharon and his sons to do the work at the Tent of Appointment on behalf of the sons of Yisrael and to make atonement for them so that no plague will strike the sons of Yisrael when they go near the sanctuary." 20 Mosheh, Aharon and the whole community of the sons of Yisrael did with the Levites just as Yahuwah commanded Mosheh. 21 The Levites purified themselves and washed their clothes. Then Aharon presented them as a wave offering before Yahuwah and made atonement for them to purify them. 22 After that, the Levites came to do their work at the Tent of Appointment under the supervision of Aharon and his sons. They did with the Levites just as Yahuwah commanded Mosheh. 23 Yahuwah said to Mosheh, 24 "This applies to the Levites: Men twenty-five years old or more shall come to take part in the work at the Tent of Appointment, 25 but at the age of fifty, they must retire from their regular service and work no longer. 26 They may assist their brothers in performing their duties at the Tent of Appointment, but they themselves must not do the work. This, then, is how you are to assign the responsibilities of the Levites." 9:1 Yahuwah spoke to Mosheh in the Desert of Sinai in the first month of the second year after they came out of Mitzrayim. He said, 2 "Have the sons of Yisrael celebrate the Pesach at the appointed time. 3 Celebrate it at the appointed time, at twilight on the fourteenth day of this month, in accordance with all its rules and regulations." 4 So Mosheh told the sons of Yisrael to celebrate the Pesach, 5 and they did so in the Desert of Sinai at twilight on the fourteenth day of the first month. The sons of Yisrael did everything just as Yahuwah commanded Mosheh. 6 But some of them could not celebrate the Pesach on that day because they were unclean on account of a dead body. So they came to Mosheh and Aharon that same day 7 and said to Mosheh, "We have become unclean because of a dead body, but why should we be kept from presenting Yahuwah's offering with the other sons of Yisrael at the appointed time?" 8 Mosheh answered them, "Wait until I find out what Yahuwah commands concerning you." 9 Then Yahuwah said to Mosheh, 10 "Tell the sons of Yisrael: 'When any of you or your descendants are unclean because of a dead body or are away on a journey, they may still celebrate Yahuwah's Pesach. 11 They are to celebrate it on the fourteenth day of the second month at twilight. They are to eat the lamb, together with unleavened bread and bitter herbs. 12 They must not leave any of it till morning or break any of its bones. When they celebrate the Pesach, they must follow all the regulations. 13 But if a man who is clean and not on a journey fails to celebrate the Pesach, that person must be cut off from his people because he did not present Yahuwah's offering at the appointed time. That man will bear the consequences of his sin. 14 "'An alien living among you who wants to celebrate Yahuwah's Pesach must do so in accordance with its rules and regulations. You must have the same regulations for the alien and the native-born.'" 15 On the day the tabernacle, the Tent of the Testimony, was set up, the cloud covered it. From evening till morning the cloud above the tabernacle looked like fire.16 That is how it continued to be; the cloud covered it, and at night it looked like fire. 17 Whenever the cloud lifted from above the Tent, the sons of Yisrael set out; wherever the cloud settled, the sons of Yisrael encamped. 18 At Yahuwah's command the sons of Yisrael set out, and at his command they encamped. As long as the cloud stayed over the tabernacle, they remained in camp. 19 When the cloud remained over the tabernacle a long time, the sons of Yisrael obeyed Yahuwah's order and did not set out. 20 Sometimes the cloud was over the tabernacle only a few days; at Yahuwah's command they would encamp, and then at his command they would set out. 21 Sometimes the cloud stayed only from evening till morning, and when it lifted in the morning, they set out. Whether by day or by night, whenever the cloud lifted, they set out. 22 Whether the cloud stayed over the tabernacle for two days or a month or a year, the sons of Yisrael would remain in camp and not set out; but when it lifted, they would set out. 23 At Yahuwah's command they encamped, and at Yahuwah's command they set out. They obeyed Yahuwah's order, in accordance with his command through Mosheh. 10:1 Yahuwah said to Mosheh: 2 "Make two trumpets of hammered silver, and use them for calling the community together and for having the camps set out. 3 When both are sounded, the whole community is to assemble before you at the entrance to the Tent of Appointment. 4 If only one is sounded, the leaders-- the heads of the clans of Yisrael-- are to assemble before you. 5 When a trumpet blast is sounded, the tribes camping on the east are to set out. 6 At the sounding of a second blast, the camps on the south are to set out. The blast will be the signal for setting out. 7 To gather the assembly, blow the trumpets, but not with the same signal. 8 "The sons of Aharon, the priests, are to blow the trumpets. This is to be a lasting ordinance for you and the generations to come. 9 When you go into battle in your own land against an enemy who is oppressing you, sound a blast on the trumpets. Then you will be remembered by Yahuwah your Elohim and rescued from your enemies. 10 Also at your times of rejoicing-- your appointments and New Moon festivals-- you are to sound the trumpets over your burnt offerings and fellowship offerings, and they will be a memorial for you before your Elohim. I am Yahuwah your Elohim." 11 On the twentieth day of the second month of the second year, the cloud lifted from above the tabernacle of the Testimony.12 Then the sons of Yisrael set out from the Desert of Sinai and traveled from place to place until the cloud came to rest in the Desert of Paran. 13 They set out, this first time, at Yahuwah's command through Mosheh. 14 The divisions of the camp of Yehudah went first, under their standard. Nahshon son of Amminadab was in command. 15 Nethanel son of Zuar was over the division of the tribe of Issachar, 16 and Eliab son of Helon was over the division of the tribe of Zebulun. 17 Then the tabernacle was taken down, and the Gershonites and Merarites, who carried it, set out. 18 The divisions of the camp of Re'uven went next, under their standard. Elizur son of Shedeur was in command. 19 Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai was over the division of the tribe of Shim'on, 20 and Eliasaph son of Deuel was over the division of the tribe of Gad. 21 Then the Kohathites set out, carrying the holy things. The tabernacle was to be set up before they arrived. 22 The divisions of the camp of Ephraim went next, under their standard. Elisha'ma son of Ammihud was in command. 23 Gamaliel son of Pedahzur was over the division of the tribe of Manasseh, 24 and Abidan son of Gideoni was over the division of the tribe of Benjamin. 25 Finally, as the rear guard for all the units, the divisions of the camp of Dan set out, under their standard. Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai was in command. 26 Pagiel son of Ocran was over the division of the tribe of Asher, 27 and Ahira son of Enan was over the division of the tribe of Naphtali. 28 This was the order of march for the Yisraelite divisions as they set out. 29 Now Mosheh said to Hobab son of Reuel the Midianite, Mosheh' father-in-law, "We are setting out for the place about which Yahuwah said, 'I will give it to you.' Come with us and we will treat you well, for Yahuwah has promised good things to Yisrael." 30 He answered, "No, I will not go; I am going back to my own land and my own people." 31 But Mosheh said, "Please do not leave us. You know where we should camp in the desert, and you can be our eyes. 32 If you come with us, we will share with you whatever good things Yahuwah gives us." 33 So they set out from the mountain of Yahuwah and traveled for three days. The ark of the covenant of Yahuwah went before them during those three days to find them a place to rest. 34 The cloud of Yahuwah was over them by day when they set out from the camp. This text marks a change in the book of Numbers. Up till this point, the instructions for marching and the assigning of duties was given for the journey. Now, and from this point forward, the actual journey begins. The Ark is central to the journey. When the cloud lifted, it was time to move. And the whole assembly lined up and moved out in order according to the instructions given before. The time of the beginning of the journey from Sinai to the Promised Land is sometimes misunderstood. The Hebrew tells us that is was the twentieth day of the second month of the second year. So, Israel had stayed at Mt. Sinai for a little less than one year. We were told in Shemot 19 that it was the third new moon when Israel arrived in the region of Mt. Sinai. Now, just under a year later, they leave for the Promised Land. 35 And so it was that when the ark set out, Mosheh said, "Rise up, Yahuwah! May your enemies be scattered; may those who hate you flee before you." 36 When it rested, he said, "Return, Yahuwah, to the countless thousands of Yisrael." These two verses are separated from the rest of the text in the Masoretic Hebrew Bible by the use of inverted letter nuns, as such: ‘Wcpu’y"w> hw"©hy> hm'äWq hv,_mo rm,aYOæw: !roàa'h' [:soïn>Bi yhi²y>w: 35s `! `^yn<)P'mi ^ya,Þn>f;m. While Bamidbar chronicles the journeys of the sons of Yisrael through the wilderness, this parsha speaks of the journey of the Ark and Presence of Yahuwah through the desert. The Stone Edition Tanach translates it as thus: When the Ark would journey, Mosheh said, "Arise, HaShem, and let your foes be scattered, let those who hate You flee from before You." And when it rested, he would say, "Reside tranquilly, O, HaShem, among the myriad thousands of Israel." The focus of this blessing by Mosheh is to again emphasize that it was Yahuwah who was leading his people Yisrael into the wilderness and on into the Promised Land. Yisrael Complains in the Desert 11:1 Now the people complained about their hardships in the hearing of Yahuwah, and when he heard them his anger was aroused. Then fire from Yahuwah burned among them and consumed some of the outskirts of the camp. 2 When the people cried out to Mosheh, he prayed to Yahuwah and the fire died down. 3 So that place was called Taberah, because fire from Yahuwah had burned among them. 4 The rabble with them began to crave other food, and again the sons of Yisrael started wailing and said, "If only we had meat to eat! 5 We remember the fish we ate in Mitzrayim at no cost-- also the cucumbers, melons, leeks, onions and garlic. 6 But now we have lost our appetite; we never see anything but this manna!" 7 The manna was like coriander seed and looked like resin. 8 The people went around gathering it, and then ground it in a handmill or crushed it in a mortar. They cooked it in a pot or made it into cakes. And it tasted like something made with olive oil. 9 When the dew settled on the camp at night, the manna also came down. 10 Mosheh heard the people of every family wailing, each at the entrance to his tent. Yahuwah became exceedingly angry, and Mosheh was troubled. 11 He asked Yahuwah, "Why have you brought this trouble on your servant? What have I done to displease you that you put the burden of all these people on me? 12 Did I conceive all these people? Did I give them birth? Why do you tell me to carry them in my arms, as a nurse carries an infant, to the land you promised on oath to their forefathers? 13 Where can I get meat for all these people? They keep wailing to me, 'Give us meat to eat!' 14 I cannot carry all these people by myself; the burden is too heavy for me. 15 If this is how you are going to treat me, put me to death right now-- if I have found favor in your eyes-- and do not let me face my own ruin." 16 Yahuwah said to Mosheh: "Bring me seventy of Yisrael's elders who are known to you as leaders and officials among the people. Have them come to the Tent of Appointment, that they may stand there with you.17 I will come down and speak with you there, and I will take of the Spirit that is on you and put the Spirit on them. They will help you carry the burden of the people so that you will not have to carry it alone. 18 "Tell the people: 'Consecrate yourselves in preparation for tomorrow, when you will eat meat. Yahuwah heard you when you wailed, "If only we had meat to eat! We were better off in Mitzrayim!" Now Yahuwah will give you meat, and you will eat it. 19 You will not eat it for just one day, or two days, or five, ten or twenty days, 20 but for a whole month-- until it comes out of your nostrils and you loathe it-- because you have rejected Yahuwah, who is among you, and have wailed before him, saying, "Why did we ever leave Mitzrayim?" '" 21 But Mosheh said, "Here I am among six hundred thousand men on foot, and you say, 'I will give them meat to eat for a whole month!' 22 Would they have enough if flocks and herds were slaughtered for them? Would they have enough if all the fish in the sea were caught for them?" 23 Yahuwah answered Mosheh, "Is Yahuwah's arm too short? You will now see whether or not what I say will come true for you." 24 So Mosheh went out and told the people what Yahuwah had said. He brought together seventy of their elders and had them stand around the Tent. 25 Then Yahuwah came down in the cloud and spoke with him, and he took of the Spirit that was on him and put the Spirit on the seventy elders. When the Spirit rested on them, they prophesied, but they did not do so again. 26 However, two men, whose names were Eldad and Medad, had remained in the camp. They were listed among the elders, but did not go out to the Tent. Yet the Spirit also rested on them, and they prophesied in the camp. 27 A young man ran and told Mosheh, "Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp." 28 YHUSHA son of Nun, who had been Mosheh' aide since youth, spoke up and said, "Mosheh, my master, stop them!" 29 But Mosheh replied, "Are you jealous for my sake? I wish that all Yahuwah's people were prophets and that Yahuwah would put his Spirit on them!" 30 Then Mosheh and the elders of Yisrael returned to the camp. 31 Now a wind went out from Yahuwah and drove quail in from the sea. It brought them down all around the camp to about three feet above the ground, as far as a day's walk in any direction. 32 All that day and night and all the next day the people went out and gathered quail. No one gathered less than ten homers. Then they spread them out all around the camp. 33 But while the meat was still between their teeth and before it could be consumed, the anger of Yahuwah burned against the people, and he struck them with a severe plague. 34 Therefore the place was named Kibroth Hattaavah, because there they buried the people who had craved other food. 35 From Kibroth Hattaavah the people traveled to Hazeroth and stayed there. Aharon and Miriam Speak Against Mosheh 12:1 Miriam and Aharon began to talk against Mosheh because of his Cushite wife, for he had married a Cushite. 2 "Has Yahuwah spoken only through Mosheh?" they asked. "Hasn't he also spoken through us?" And Yahuwah heard this. 3 (Now Mosheh was a very humble man, more humble than anyone else on the face of the earth.) 4 At once Yahuwah said to Mosheh, Aharon and Miriam, "Come out to the Tent of Appointment, all three of you." So the three of them came out. 5 Then Yahuwah came down in a pillar of cloud; he stood at the entrance to the Tent and summoned Aharon and Miriam. When both of them stepped forward, 6 he said, "Listen to my words: "When a prophet of Yahuwah is among you, I reveal myself to him in visions, I speak to him in dreams. 7 But this is not true of my servant Mosheh; he is faithful in all my house. 8 With him I speak face to face, clearly and not in riddles; he sees the form of Yahuwah. Why then were you not afraid to speak against my servant Mosheh?" 9 The anger of Yahuwah burned against them, and he left them. 10 When the cloud lifted from above the Tent, there stood Miriam-- leprous, like snow. Aharon turned toward her and saw that she had leprosy; 11 and he said to Mosheh, "Please, my master, do not hold against us the sin we have so foolishly committed. 12 Do not let her be like a stillborn infant coming from its mother's womb with its flesh half eaten away." 13 So Mosheh cried out to Yahuwah, "O Elohim, please heal her!" 14 Yahuwah replied to Mosheh, "If her father had spit in her face, would she not have been in disgrace for seven days? Confine her outside the camp for seven days; after that she can be brought back." 15 So Miriam was confined outside the camp for seven days, and the people did not move on till she was brought back. 16 After that, the people left Hazeroth and encamped in the Desert of Paran. Now Mosheh's relationship to Elohim is well documented. He was given great prestige and great authority. Aharon, Mosheh's older brother, was also given a special role and authority. Aharon acted as Mosheh's spokesman before Pharaoh, and was later appointed as Cohen HaGadol (High Priest) for Israel.
But Miriam had no such authority. She was well known for her
relationship of sister to Mosheh and Aharon. She was a leader of
praise for the women during the exodus from Egypt as she sang a song in
praise of Yahuwah when he delivered the nation through the Sea of Reeds
while drowning Pharaoh's army in the same. The Scriptures call
Miriam a prophetess:
Then Miriam the prophetess, Aharon's sister, took a tambourine in
her hand, and all the women followed her, with tambourines and
dancing. Miriam sang to them... (Shemot [Exodus] 15:20-21) What was the nature of her responsibility as "prophetess"? She was prophesying to the women, not to the men! Her teaching and inspiration was to the women of the nation. But Yahuwah never appointed her to any position of authority over all Israel. Evidently, she desired that for herself. When Mosheh took on a Cushite wife, Miriam took this opportunity to criticize him and suggest that she could lead Israel just as effectively as Mosheh. She attempted to elevate herself to the place which Mosheh alone was allowed - that of leading Israel and delivering the Word of Yahuwah to the people. This seems to be the intent of the saying, "Hasn't he also spoken through us?" (vs.2) Nowhere throughout the Torah will you see recorded that Yahuwah placed a woman in a role of leadership over men or a woman taking authority over men. But Miriam tried to place herself in such a prestigious role before all Israel. Elohim immediately called them to appear before him, and the rest is a matter of record. Aharon was scolded but Miriam was both scolded and punished. Yahuwah's response to Miriam was more severe because she was trying to usurp a role which was out of her league. Miriam was plagued with the most dreaded disease known to man - leprosy. This malady was an extremely contagious skin disease which required the afflicted one to be completely separated from all other humans. So, Miriam was booted out of the camp and made to stay away from all human contact for seven days. Yahuwah explained that the shame Miriam brought on herself was equivalent to the shame a woman would sustain if her father had spit in her face. This brings to mind what Paul said about women speaking up in the assembly of the Body: ...for it is disgraceful for a woman to speak in the assembly. (1 Corinthians 14:35) The shame or disgrace for a woman which the Scriptures speak of is when she steps outside the role of submission where Elohim placed her and she tries to usurp a role or a privilege which was alone granted to man as her head. A woman speaking in assembly is disgraceful for the same reason that Miriam's actions were disgraceful. Both are trying to adopt a leadership role that Elohim gave exclusively to the man. Later in Torah, we are reminded again about the folly of Miriam's pride in wanting to obtain a role equal to that of Mosheh. Remember what Yahuwah your Elohim did to Miriam along the way after you came out of Mitzrayim. (Devarim 24:9) This ominous warning suggests dire consequences to those women who would seek to usurp authority and headship for themselves which is appropriate only for a man.
Haftarah: Zecharyah 2:14-4:7
(English 2:10-4:7)
10 11 "Many nations will be joined with Yahuwah in that day and will become my people. I will live among you and you will know that Yahuwah Almighty has sent me to you. 12 Yahuwah will inherit Yehudah as his portion in the holy land and will again choose Yerushalayim. 13 Be still before Yahuwah, all mankind, because he has roused himself from his holy dwelling." 3:1 Then he showed me Yahusha the high priest standing before the angel of Yahuwah, and Satan standing at his right side to accuse him. 2 Yahuwah said to Satan, "Yahuwah rebuke you, Satan! Yahuwah, who has chosen Yerushalayim, rebuke you! Is not this man a burning stick snatched from the fire?" 3 Now Yahusha was dressed in filthy clothes as he stood before the angel. 4 The angel said to those who were standing before him, "Take off his filthy clothes." Then he said to Yahusha, "See, I have taken away your sin, and I will put rich garments on you." 5 Then I said, "Put a clean turban on his head." So they put a clean turban on his head and clothed him, while the angel of Yahuwah stood by. 6 The angel of Yahuwah gave this charge to Yahusha: 7 "This is what Yahuwah Almighty says: 'If you will walk in my ways and keep my requirements, then you will govern my house and have charge of my courts, and I will give you a place among these standing here. 8 "'Listen, O high priest Yahusha and your associates seated before you, who are men symbolic of things to come: I am going to bring my servant, the Branch. 9 See, the stone I have set in front of Yahusha! There are seven eyes on that one stone, and I will engrave an inscription on it,' says Yahuwah Almighty, 'and I will remove the sin of this land in a single day. 10 "'In that day each of you will invite his neighbor to sit under his vine and fig tree,' declares Yahuwah Almighty." 4:1 Then the angel who talked with me returned and wakened me, as a man is wakened from his sleep. 2 He asked me, "What do you see?" I answered, "I see a solid gold lampstand with a bowl at the top and seven lights on it, with seven channels to the lights. 3 Also there are two olive trees by it, one on the right of the bowl and the other on its left." 4 I asked the angel who talked with me, "What are these, my master?" 5 He answered, "Do you not know what these are?" "No, my master," I replied. 6 So he said to me, "This is the word of Yahuwah to Zerubbabel: 'Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,' says Yahuwah Almighty. 7 "What are you, O mighty mountain? Before Zerubbabel you will become level ground. Then he will bring out the capstone to shouts of 'Elohim bless it! Elohim bless it!'"
